Boston Scientific employeesvolunteer at Hopkinton camp

Boston Scientific employees and their families recently marked the Natick company's 30th anniversary by participating in a volunteer project at the MetroWest YMCA Day Camp in Hopkinton. The employees volunteered their time to paint, clean and restore the camp's outdoor facilities.

 

Boost Fitness, Pediatrics West target obesity in youths

Boost Fitness has launched a special exercise program for obese youths as part of the Healthy Eating Lifestyle Program (HELP) created by Pediatrics West, a Westford-based private, independent pediatric practice. It received funding for HELP from Partners Community Healthcare Inc.'s System Improvement Grant Program. Based in Northborough, Boost Fitness recently opened a fitness center in Westford. It also operates centers in Northborough and Hudson, and is planning a fourth club in Framingham.

 

Whalley Computer receives high ranking as a reseller

Whalley Computer Associates (WCA), an independent computer hardware and software resellers and system integrators, was ranked recently by VARBusiness Magazine as the 250th largest computer reseller in North America. This ranking places WCA in the top one-third of one percent of the more than 120,000 solution providers throughout North America. WCA reported $140 million in revenues in 2008, a 38.5 percent increase over 2007. WCA was also one of only 18 members of the top 500 solution providers in North America to receive additional recognition as a best practice leader. The company has offices in Milford and Southwick.

 

NStar electricity, gas price cuts to take effect

NStar's basic service supply price for electric customers will drop by 27 percent beginning today and will continue at the lower rate through the end of the year. The price cut will save the average NStar residential customer more than $17 per month. Also, supply prices for NStar's natural gas customers will drop today as well. This marks the second drop in natural gas prices for NStar customers since early May. The average residential gas customer can expect to see an additional savings of more than $5 per month added to the roughly $35 decrease that went into effect on May 1.

 

3Com names Sherman to board of directors

MARLBOROUGH - Computer networking gear maker 3Com Corp. said yesterday it has named J. Donald Sherman, the chief financial officer of Akamai Technologies Inc., to its board. Sherman, 44, will start his post July 31. 3Com's shares fell 12 cents, or 2.5 percent, to close at $4.73 yesterday.

 

Dunkin' Donuts pulls beverages over salmonella

CANTON - Dunkin' Donuts has temporarily halted the sale of hot chocolate and Dunkaccino brand beverages after learning that some equipment used at a supplier's facility was contaminated with salmonella. The company said in a statement yesterday that none of its products was contaminated and that the decision to withdraw the beverages from its stores was done as a precaution to ensure customer safety. The supplier, Plainview Milk Products Cooperative of Plainview, Minn., announced it had voluntarily recalled its instant nonfat dried milk and whey protein as well as some thickening agents due to potential salmonella contamination. Plainview said there were no reported illnesses. Dunkin' Donuts said it expected to resume hot chocolate and Dunkaccino sales shortly.

 

IBM names two employees Distinguished Engineers

IBM recently announced that two IBM Westford employees have been named IBM Distinguished Engineers for their outstanding and sustained technical achievement and leadership in the company. This is one of IBM's top technical honors, and places them among only 47 honorees for 2009 from among its approximately 400,000 employees. The designation signifies that Ajamu A. Wesley of Marlborough and Fernando Salazar of Arlington have proved themselves to be the company's top ``hands-on'' technical experts in instant messaging software and Web 2.0 technologies, respectively. They join the ranks of five active IBM Westford employees who are also Distinguished Engineers.
