A regional Registry in Framingham? Great idea. It worked pretty well for decades. Until the state decided it wasn't necessary and closed it and put a branch in a Pike rest stop in Natick so those trying to go to that Registry could pay some tolls for their efforts.
Getting rid of the Registry in Milford? Terrible idea. Has anyone from the state been over there lately? It's not exactly as if nobody is using the Milford site.
Yes, you can take care of a number of routine transactions online. But you can't get a learner's permit online, take an eye test or road test online. Dozens of other services fall into the in-person category as well.
I have no issue with the idea of "modernizing'' the Registry, and I get that this is just a "conceptual plan,'' so maybe I'm off base with my skepticism.
After all, the state plans for transportation-related changes have a great track record, right?
