PAWS was founded in 1982 by Wakefield resident Esther Nowell, but we serve the additional communities of Stoneham, Winchester, Woburn, Malden, Melrose, Reading, North Reading, Lynnfield, Saugus and more.

We are an all-volunteer non-profit, animal rescue organization. A primary part of what we do is find homes for abandoned and surrendered animals. Often times, when elderly people move into assisted living or nursing homes they are not allowed to bring their pets. They surrender these much-loved pets to PAWS and we find new homes for them. We also receive calls from families when their elderly parents pass away and the families cannot take their pets.

At any given time we have 50-75 animals in foster care waiting for permanent homes. These animals include cats, dogs, guinea pigs, birds, rabbits, hamsters and sometimes even snakes. We do not have a shelter, but are what is known as a foster network. We almost always have a waiting list of pets that need our help. As soon as one pet is adopted another moves into the foster home from the waiting list.

PAWS holds adoptions at Petco in Woburn on the first, third and fifth Saturday each month from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. We also hold adoption hours at VCA Wakefield Animal Hospital on the second and fourth Saturday each month from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. You can see available pets anytime on our Web site at pawswakefield@petfinder.com.

We run a 24-hour a day response line.
PAWS gets no state or local funding.

We are currently helping a Winchester family re-home a pet owned by an elderly family member who is going into a nursing home. Last fall a Winchester family, not able to support their pets, surrendered two cats to PAWS and we offered financial assistance to them to have their third cat spayed.
